Chapter 12

The next morning Jessica slept in late, and it took her longer than usual to get ready. Today she was a different woman…with a new last name. And with that name and status change came a great responsibility. Her mind still wasn’t sure how to accept the new realities to her world, but she was managing to keep her panic at bay. With bodyguards and cameras watching her at what felt like pretty much all times, she knew she needed to project a certain appearance if she wanted their respect. And hyperventilating while saying “Oh my God” over and over again probably wasn’t the impression she was going for. The meds her doctor had prescribed her helped a great deal, leaving her clearheaded but not as jumpy, and she was thankful for them.

With the need to at least look the role she’d been thrust into, she’d donned a fabulous purpely-gray knit dress and paired it with some amazing silver snakeskin Gucci heels. Impressive diamond-stud earrings surrounded by platinum filigree went in her ears and a matching bracelet on her wrist. The big sapphire wedding set still glittered on her finger, and she added a thick serpentine platinum choker with a filigree of diamonds. She felt as if she was dressed for a fabulous New Year’s Eve party instead of going to breakfast, but she needed to get used to the new culture she found herself in.

Plus, it was fun to play dress up with the jewels Alex had designed for her all those years ago. In a way it felt like she was reclaiming a part of her past, and not just in a physical sense. Each piece of jewelry held a memory, a perfect snapshot of the moment Alex had given her the different pieces. The earrings she wore today were new, but he’d given the necklace to her at their home in Ireland before going out and playing in the snow. Well, she played while he watched her with a predator’s intent, but it had been fun.

Touching the now warm metal of the necklace fondly, she still wondered if it was too much.

Vera had said that in the social circles Jessica would now move in, it was the normal thing for the women to wear small fortunes in jewelry in public. It was a statement of both Alex’s wealth and protection that she could wear such audacious bling without fear of getting mugged. No one, not even the world’s best jewel thief, would be tempted to steal from Alexandr Dubinski.

A shiver raced down her spine, momentary apprehension urging her to stall, but she forced herself to walk to the door of her bedroom and face the day.

As soon as she was in the brightly lit hall, Zoya caught her attention. The woman wore a charcoal-gray suit that was of a severe cut, but the pale-green blouse beneath added a feminine touch that kept the statuesque woman from appearing too butch. Yesterday she’d seen a few of the male bodyguards giving Zoya appreciative looks behind her back, but none to her face.
